heard that you were coming and instinctively knew that the wilderness in me would be an ocean in you there's a hundred million kindnesses that i'd never do you're gonna find out soon treat the women right and leave the whiskey alone go to bed when you're tired, always pick up the phone people want to feel forgiven and if you can make them feel it then you'll never be alone through the door to the car to the bridge to the island i didn't wanna talk i didn't wanna talk i just watched the way the sun played on the office buildings into a city, into a plane up into a storm moving infinitely north thinking only about myself it's a goddamn shame heard that you were going and i knew i had to go to get closer to the place from which you'd been set afloat there's a hundred million winds that blow a hundred million boats so— ~ * ~ JEH: bass, guitar solo, singing JJM: other guitars, perc, singing

she had a bouquet of black balloons she floated away like in cartoons she's looking down from heaven now all fear and wonder, all hope and doubt in the sweet hereafter my angel croons all because of a bouquet of black balloons the oar slapped the creek bed one dark october weekend the road ahead, here it gathers like a ribbon here it coils like a rattler goes crooked as an antler here it tangles like an ancient tree ~ * ~ JEH: acoustic guitar, singing JJM: baritone guitar, perc, singing

You Were Me 02:30
bright cold winter morning the sky opened like a flower i nodded off in a chair and had a dream that seemed to last for hours you were me and i was a young girl ambling soundlessly the snow blows sideways the city asleep when you walked away you ran in slow motion your face spins away spinning and spinning and it slips away ~ * ~ JEH: strummed guitars, toy piano, singing JJM: ebowed guitar, perc, singing

Rosemary 03:04
sweet rosemary opened the door for me sang me a song she was so kind to me but i treated her mean word got around about what went down like fire catches dead leaves the way people talk when they don't want to talk to a cruel hearted creep like me we all get tired of the same boring things but rosemary never got tired cleaved to me tight held me through the night how she cried when i tried to leave i never wanted to be anybody's and somehow i didn't believe that she could really love me i sensed i was broken a long time before but now i know it for sure grudges she held she kept to herself ~ * ~ JEH: guitar solo, singing JJM: other guitars, singing

that a man like you could have in mind to do anything but work and die woman at your side harrows hell every night and keeps the blood to a simmer while you hold your breath and you turn down the dimmer mouth is open now cities slide into the ocean your ghost is holding on the din of waking waves water finds its winding way a sun colored circle where the blood soaked through the flannel rag andy goddam you're a nothing man and everyone who knows you knows it your nose is open now and i'm still wearing last year's love ~ * ~ JEH: fuzz bass, singing JJM: guitar, perc, singing

Sinner 02:41
said when you sin it's all in your mind so when you lie you can say you're not but no one's trying to cheat you out who'd steal a sigh from your sleeping mouth some walls were built, some walls just grew with all the water and time always passing us by we were born and one day we will die in the woods we read about thieves and demons await us but they turned out to be children overawed by existence someday if you and i get old this moment won't be lost so hold on with both hands and take it slow one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die one day we will die ~ * ~ JEH: guitar, singing JJM: feedback, synths, singing

about

WESTER was recorded in a Denver living room over five or four snowy and sweltering spring days. It began as a long distance collaboration between John Hickey and James Meakim, who met across a high school cafeteria table in suburban New York some 18 years earlier.

The result is a batch of unfussy folk-pop tunes constructed from clattering guitars and drunks-choir singalongs. There are deep mountainous drums and momentary forays into feedback drone. There are some synthesizers and a few guitar solos. The first song is about a baby and the last song is about growing old and dying. Only one song has a harmonica but I won't spoil it for you.

The limited edition, handmade cassette edition of WESTER is presented by Whprwhil Records, based in Seattle.
